About Wayanad

Wayanad is one of the districts in Kerala that has been able to retain its pristine nature. Hidden away in the hills of his land are some of the oldest tribes, as yet untouched by civilisation. Wayanad is known for its pictureque mist clad hill stations, sprawling spice plantations, luxuriant forests and rich cultural traditions. The leading centres of South India like Ooty, Mysore, Coorg, Kozhikode and Kannur are aroung this region.

Road : Well connected by roads from Kozhikode, Kannur, Ooty (175 km from Kalpetta ) and Mysore ( 140 km from Kalpetta).

17 km from east of Manathavady, 145 km northeast of Sultan Battery. This 950 acre, uninhaited island on the eastward bound Kabani River is an ideal pinic spot. The wooded strech of land is home to rare species of birds, orchids and herbs.

 
Thirunelly Temple

32 km noertheast of Manathavady. Surrounded by Kambamala, Karimala andVaradiga, the Thirunelly Temple is a marvel of temple architecture. The shrine is shielded with 30 granite. The crystal clear waters of the Papanasini River running downhill add to the enchantment of the place.

Kalpetta
Chembra Peak
14 km west of Kalpetta. At 2100 m above mean sea level project with the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia is being built here. Asprawling sancturay and park with ever flowering trees are major tourist attractions.
 
Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary

40 km from Mananthavady. This sanctuary in Karnatak state extends over an area of 643.39 sq km. The park houses diverse species of plant and animal life.
Visiting Timing : 0600 - 0800 hrs and 1500 - 1730 hrs.

Sultan Battery
Edakkal Caves
12 km from Sultan Battery. The two caves are located at a height of 100 m on Ambukutty Mala near Ambalavayal. The New Stone Age pictorial writing on the was of these natural caves at Edakkal are evidence of the civilisation the existing in these region in prhistoric times. The caves canbe accessed only by a 1 km trekking trail frm Edakkal. Morning hours are the best time to visit the caves. Entry is permitted ony up to 1700 hrs.
 
Vythiri
Lakkidi
55 km east of Kozhikode and 5 km from south of Vythiri. Lakkidi, the gateway to Wayanad, is situated 700 m above sea level, at the crest of the Thamarasseri Ghat pass. Lofty oeaks, gurgling streams and luxuriant forests and magic to the journey up the winding roads to this hill station.
 
Pookot Lake
This perennial frsh water lake, nestled among wooded hills, is the only one of its kind in Kerala. Boating facilities, a children's park, a handicrats and spices emporium and a fesh water aquarium are among the tourist facilties available here.
 
Amblavayal Heritage Museum
Near the Ambukuthi hill region is this heritage museum housing artifacts and belongings of the various tribes of the land. This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala.
