The Wild & The Wonderful in Kerala
  Silent Valley National Park


Located in Palakkad District


The Silent Valley National Park is perhaps the closest to a virgin forest in the entire Western Ghats. It is home to India's last substantial stretch pf tropical evergreen rain forests, and a lagre number of wild animals, thanks to its difficult terrain and remotenes.

Location : 4 km from Mannarkad in the mortheastern corner of Palakkad disrict.

Access : Vehicular transport i allowed only up to Mukkali, nearly 24 km fom the Park. The rest of the way has to be covered on foot up to the source of the river Kunthipuzha which flows through the valley before merging into the Bharatthapuzha (River Nila, the longest in Kerala and believe to be life force of the State).

Major Wildlife Attraction : Elephants, tigers, wild dog, flying squirrel, spotted deer, barking deer etc.

  Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in Palakkad District.

Location : Tucked away in the valley between the Anamala ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala on the majestic Western Ghats is the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. Three dams have been built here by the Tamil Nadu government under the Parambikulam - Aliyar Project. The reservoir harbours serveral varieties of aquatic fauna.

Access :
Nearest bus stations: Pollachi (60 km), Parambikulam.
Nearest railway station: Pollachi.
Nearest airport : Coimbatore (100 km).

Area : Total: 285 sq. km.
Water Spread: Parambikulam Lake-21.2 sq. km.
Thoonacadavu Lake- 4.33 sq.km.
Parivarippallam-2.89 sq. km.

Climate :
Temperature : low. Mist in the morning hours.
Rainfall: Average 1720 mm.
Heavy rains: June - August

Major Wildlife Attraction : Bonnet macaque, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, loris, tiger, leopard, jungle cat, mongoose,fox, bear, elephant, gaur, sambhar, crocodile, python, snake, darter, black eagle, aral fish, bral fish, black woodpecker etc.

  Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary


Located in Wayanad District.

Location : Established in 1873, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarahole and Bandipur of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu. Rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which was established with the specific objective of conserving the biological heritage of the region. The management of the sanctuary lays emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration to the general ife-style of the tribals and otheres who live on the fringes of the forest.
These forests also have a historical importance as it was from here that Pazhassi Raja fought the British.

Access : Goods roads and rails connect the sanctuary with Kozhikode, Mysore and Ooty - all within a 110km radius. The nearest airport is Kozhikode. Sulthan Bathery, Tholpetty and Muthanga are important centers of the Sanctuary.

Area : Total 777 sq. km. Core 350 sq. km. Periyar Lake: 26 sq

Best time to visit: October-May.

Topography: 650 m to over 1150 m above sea level.
Highest Pesk: Karottimala (1158 m)
Rainfall: 2000 mm.

Major Wildlife Attraction : Elephant, tiger, panther, jungle cat, monkey, snakes, lizard, peacock,babbler, owl, deer, bear, wild dog etc.

  Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in Thrissur District.

Location : The Sanctuary lies in the western valley of Nelliampathy in the Mukundapuram taluk of Thrissur district. Part of it is adjacent to the Peechi - Vazhani Santuary and the rest to the PArambikulam Santuary. An Artificial lake ahs been formed here by the dam across the Chimmini River. The Sanctuary, which was established in 1984, occupies the watershed areas of the Kunumali and Mupliyam rivers and is enriched by hills.

Access : Amballoor (12 km) on the Ernakulam - Thrissur road.
Nearest Rail : rail and bus stations are at Thrissur (35 km).
Nearest airport : Kochi (50 km)

Cold months: May- November

Highest temperature : 24-36 degree C
Lowest Temperature: 15 Degree C
Rainfall: 2980 mm

Major Wildlife Attraction : Leopard, elephant, bear, wild pig, wild bison, tiger etc.

  Thattekkad Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in Ernakulam District
.

Location : 13 km northeast of Kothamangalam along the Pooyamkutty Road. The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, constituted in 1983, occupies thet catchment area of the Bhoothathankettu Dam.The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary atracts nature lovers from all over the world.

Access : Nearest Railway station : Aluva (48 km)
Nearest Airprot : Kochi (71 km).
Area: 25.16 sq.km.

Major Wildlife Attraction : Leopard, bear, procupine, cuckoo, Crimson - throated barbet, bee-eater, sunbird, shrike, fairy bluebird, Python, cobra.
